Introducing the Corpus of Historical English Law Reports: Structure and compilation techniques

The research group Variation, Linguistic Change and Grammaticalization from the University of Santiago de Compostela has been lately working on the compilation of a new specialised corpus of legal English: The Corpus of Historical English Law Reports (CHELAR). The corpus will contain approximately half a million words and cover the years from about 1535 to 1999. The texts included in the corpus are British English law reports: records of judicial decisions that are “cited by lawyers and judges for their use as precedent in subsequent cases” (EBO, n.d.). Except for the legal section of the forthcoming ARCHER corpus version 3.2 (A Representative Corpus of Historical English Registers), none of the existing corpora of English at present includes law reports. This is precisely what makes the CHELAR corpus different from other synchronic and diachronic corpora of legal English. Once completed, the Corpus of Historical English Law Reports will, therefore, constitute a new, useful resource for linguists with an interest in legal language, from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.

The development of phrasal verbs in British English from 1650 to 1990: A corpus-based study

Phrasal verbs or particle verbs are one of the most idiosyncratic features of the English language, as well as of other Germanic languages, such as German or Dutch. They pose many problems for non-native speakers, because their meanings have to be learned separately from the meanings of their verbal bases (give vs. give up), given that the union of the two elements of the compound (the verb and the particle) very often gives rise to new non-compositional forms very similar to idioms. This dissertation tackles some of the questions concerning the nature of phrasal verbs. First, I intend to delimit the concept of phrasal verb as conceived of in Present-day English. One of the topics often discussed in relation to this category is precisely that of the difficulty of establishing the boundaries between phrasal verbs and other related categories. Second, I aim at filling a gap in the literature of phrasal verbs by carrying out a corpus analysis of the development of these structures in the recent history of English, more precisely between 1650 and 1990. After comparing the recent history of phrasal verbs with their status in earlier stages of the language as described in the literature, a third aim of the present dissertation is to establish a relationship between these structures and the processes of grammaticalization, lexicalization and idiomatization. For these purposes, data have been extracted from several sources, in particular from ARCHER 3.1 (A Representative Corpus of Historical English Registers), although many illustrative examples, especially those involving Present-day English combinations, have also been obtained from the BNC (British National Corpus) or the Internet. Recurrent use has also been made of several dictionaries of English, most notably the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as dictionaries specialized in phrasal verbs and related structures

In search of the spoken word in Spanish written diachronic corpora: A comparison with English corpora

The present work analyses the diachronic corpora of Spanish available to date, paying especial attention to the scarce representation of the spoken language in them. Although it is true that the creation of diachronic corpora of Spanish has progressed significantly over the last forty years, there is still room for improvement, especially as regards peninsular Spanish, as well as the inclusion of documents that allow diatopic, diaphasic and diastratic analyses from the diachronic perspective. This piece of research provides data from three English diachronic corpora along these lines, which might be taken as a point of departure for the creation of similar tools in Spanish.El presente trabajo indaga en los corpus diacrónicos del español disponibles hasta la fecha, prestando especial atención a la escasa representación en los mismos de textos que se aproximan al plano oral. Si bien es cierto que la creación de corpus diacrónicos del español ha avanzado significativamente durante los últimos cuarenta años, todavía hay cabida para mejoras, especialmente en el ámbito del español peninsular y en lo que se refiere a la inclusión de textos que permitan estudios de las variedades diatópicas, diafásicas y diastráticas desde la perspectiva diacrónica. Esta investigación ofrece además datos sobre tres corpus diacrónicos en lengua inglesa centrados en esta línea, que se podrían tomar como modelo para la creación de herramientas similares para el español

New methods for analysing diachronic suffix competition across registers : How -ity gained ground on -ness in Early Modern English

Special issue, Corpus Studies of Language through Time, ed. by Tony McEnery, Gavin Brookes & Isobelle Clarke.This paper tracks stylistic variation in the use of two roughly synonymous suffixes, the Romance -ity and the native -ness, during the Early Modern English period. We seek to verify from a statistical viewpoint the claims of Rodríguez-Puente (2020) , who reports on a decrease of -ness in favour of -ity in registers representative of the speech-written and formal-informal continua at that time. To this end, we develop new methods of statistical and visual analysis that enable diachronic comparisons of competing processes across subcorpora, building upon an earlier method by Säily and Suomela (2009) . Our results confirm that -ity gained ground first in written registers and then spread towards speech-related registers, and we are able to time this change more accurately thanks to a novel periodisation. We also provide strong statistical support indicating that the proportion of -ity was significantly higher in legal registers than in other registers.Peer reviewe
